about

So Beck had this remix contest for the track "Mixed Bizness", off of Midnight Vultures, sometime around 1999. Michael and I decided to enter the contest... who knew, maybe we would win??

At the time Scatter-Shot Theory Headquarters was a trailer on Michael's family's property, so I spent several days up there with Michael working on the remix. First we did the hip hop one, which I thought was pretty dope. But Michael thought we should try another... so we went in a completely different direction and did the hardcore mix. Still, Michael thought we should try again, so then we did the latin remix, which actually WON THE CONTEST!

That's right, supposedly the great Beck Hanson himself listened to all the contest entries and picked Scatter-Shot Theory's "The Latin Mix" as numero uno. (Second place was actually another hardcore style dance mix by someone else...)

(Of course, before we sent the mixes off, we couldn't resist doing a "folk remix", with some new, rather "scatter-logical" lyrics sung by us. In my fantasy world Beck got at least a chuckle out of that one.)

So, what ended up happening as a result of Scatter-Shot Theory, the mostly imporvisational sample band from Northern Cali, winning the Beck Mixed Bizness Remix Contest? Well, a virtually untitled CD single came out limited edition that had our remix on it and some other obscure Beck stuff and a music vid you could watch on your computer. You really can't find it anywhere... I've got one copy. What makes it even more obscure is that there was a separate remix EP that came out for Mixed Bizness as well, with other remixes on that and stuff.

I was hoping we could maybe meet Beck, or get to like work with him on next album. I was young and naive... this was, of course, like 15 years ago. Now I am much more realistic about the music bizness...

Oh, and they also they gave us a free copy of the video editing program called "Vegas", that I think Michael used a couple of times.

Anyway... enjoy!
